Why pointing fails
Most bad repointing was never bonded to anything
Smear new mortar over old and it looks fine for a year. Then it falls off in sheets because it only ever gripped the surface. Rain gets behind it and the wall is worse than before you started.
- Raked to depth — every joint cut back to at least twice its width before a trowel goes near it.
- Right mortar for the age of the house — lime for solid-wall period homes, cement for cavity-wall.
- Packed and struck — fully compacted, then finished to the profile already on your house.
