Repointing in Shaw

Shaw and Crompton have the classic mill-town mix: stone terraces on the older streets around the mills, brick terraces below them, and semis from the 30s onwards. High Crompton is exposed and stone-heavy — lime pointing territory. We repoint, replace spalled brick and stone, and sort chimneys across all of it.

High Crompton and the streets above the mills — Rochdale Road, Grains Road, Buckstones — are stone terraces built in gritstone with lime joints, and they take the full force of the weather off the moor. Where they've been repointed in cement the faces are blowing and the walls hold damp; we rake the cement out and repoint in a natural hydraulic lime matched to the original, protecting the work while it cures.

The brick terraces around Market Street, Milnrow Road and the town centre are usually cement-mortar or a lime original that has been patched in cement over the years — we check before quoting so the right mortar goes back. Frost-damaged bricks are cut out and replaced with matches before repointing so the repair doesn't show.
