Repointing in Heywood

Heywood is ten minutes from our yard. The town centre and Hopwood have brick terraces where the original lime mortar has often been patched in cement over the years; the 1930s and post-war semis around Darn Hill and Back o' th' Moss are cement-mortar cavity walls and straightforward to repoint. Newer estates off Pilsworth Road sometimes need snagging repoints where developer pointing has gone hollow.

Heywood is close enough that we can do the small jobs that bigger firms turn down — a single chimney, one gable, a garden wall — without the price carrying a travel loading. The brick terraces around Bamford Road, Rochdale Road East and the streets behind the town centre nearly all had lime originally; where the joints have been filled in cement we take it out rather than smearing more over the top.

On the 1930s semis around Darn Hill, Back o' th' Moss and Hopwood the common faults are frost-damaged bricks below the damp course, hollow pointing around bay windows and cracked window cills. We cut out and replace the bricks, re-bed cills and repoint the elevation in one job.

Heywood's new-build estates off Pilsworth Road and Middleton Road are a few years old now and developer pointing is starting to go hollow and drop out — a warranty snagging repoint is quick and stops water getting into the cavity.
