Repointing in North Manchester

We cover north Manchester — Blackley, Crumpsall, Moston, Harpurhey, Prestwich and Newton Heath. It's mostly Victorian and Edwardian brick terraces with a lot of inter-war semis; soft red brick that's suffered from decades of hard cement patching. Full-elevation repoints and chimney work are our usual jobs here.

Prestwich, Crumpsall and Blackley have long streets of Edwardian semis and Victorian terraces in soft red brick, most of them repointed in cement at least once. The tell-tale is a wall that looks fine from the road but has hollow, cracked joints and spalled brick faces when you run a hand over it. We rake the cement out, replace damaged bricks with reclaimed or new matches and repoint in a mortar that suits the brick, struck to match the neighbouring houses.

Moston, Harpurhey and Newton Heath are mostly inter-war council semis with cement mortar that is simply worn out — straightforward repointing in a matched sand-and-cement mix. Full elevations, gables and chimney stacks are our usual jobs here, and we run a tower rather than working off ladders.
