Repointing in Oldham

Oldham's housing runs from stone-fronted terraces in Saddleworth, Lees and Springhead — which want lime, not cement — through the red-brick terraces of Werneth, Coppice and Glodwick, to the 1930s semis of Chadderton and Royton. We work across all of it, including the high, exposed streets above the town where pointing takes a beating and chimneys go first.

Saddleworth, Lees, Springhead and Grotton are stone villages with strong conservation-area rules: the pointing has to be lime, it has to be the right colour and it has to be struck to match. We've worked to those requirements for years and can put a sample panel up before the job starts.

Down in the town, the terraces around Werneth, Coppice, Glodwick and Hathershaw are Accrington and common red brick. A lot of it was repointed hard and proud in the 70s and the brick has paid for it — spalled faces, blown arrises and joints you can push a finger into. We cut out the damaged bricks, replace them with matches and repoint in a mortar the brick can live with.

Chadderton, Royton and the 1930s streets off Broadway are cement-mortar semis and straightforward to repoint. Chimneys are our most common Oldham call — the exposed stacks above the town on the Pennine side catch everything the weather throws at them.
